NIAGADS

We are investigators, scientists, bioinformaticians, and analysts who are part of National Institute on Aging Genetics of Alzheimer’s Disease Data Storage Site (NIAGADS)

What is NIAGADS?

NIAGADS is a national genetics data repository established by the National Institute on Aging (NIA). NIAGADS is a federally funded project specifically designed to help qualified scientific investigators access genomic data for the study of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Alzheimer’s Disease Related Dementias (ADRD).

NIAGADS serves the AD research community at large to facilitate access of genomic data with the end goal of discovering new therapeutic approaches and drug therapies for AD.

Data generated from NIA-funded genetic and genomic studies are stored at NIAGADS, and include a broad range of data from studies, sequencing, related primary and secondary data, and more.

What do we do?

  1. Curate, update, and disseminate high-quality data generated by investigators studying genomic studies related to ADRD for access by an international scientific community conducting similar research
  2. Coordinate Alzheimer’s Disease Sequencing Project (ADSP), a National Institute on Aging initiative, to identify new genetic variants by sequencing genomes/exomes of more than 100,000 AD patients and cognitively normal controls

The NIAGADS database is updated frequently and offers researchers studying AD the chance to examine many layers of data in a single workspace.

How does it work?

Qualified investigators from around the world can request access to data hosted by NIAGADS. NIAGADS can offer information on AD genetics expression, and epigenomics for researchers to use and much more. The database stores and distributes genetic data while also making the data available to the public.

Best Practices

In 2003, NIA created the AD Genetics Sharing Policy. This policy ensures that sharing of biological samples, phenotypic data, and genotypic data for NIA-funded studies is managed responsibly by all parties.
